The Weekend Artist, by Gerard Smith is an art book for the non artist.  

You can grab this book with absolutely NO art experience and within a few hours have painted a piece of art you will be more than happy to hang on your wall. This i guarantee.  

The author has put a huge amount of work into this book in selecting and explaining paintings that are contemporary yet easy to execute.  

I purchased this book as a family present some years back and together we used it to make presents for our friends and family one Christmas.  We made some wonderful art that we still find hanging on walls when we go to visit. 

Literally a hundred times a week I teach non-painters how to paint in a 'paint and sip' setting at my studio, Montana Art Project, and almost without exception my customers express surprise at what they manage to paint in 2.5 hours whilst sipping a drink and having fun with friends.  MAP is a unique Paint and Sip as you will see if you click that link.  This book in no small way helped me put together a technique that allowed that to happen. 

This book showed me that unique art doesn't have to be tight and technical, and doesn't have to come after hours of practice.  Art can be easy, art can be fun, and the practice of art can bring people together.  

The author presents about 20 different projects and includes templates and stencils.  The art materials are listed and explained and are universally basic in nature.  We are talking rulers, pencils, brushes you probably already have in the house, glue, scissors, and some basic paints and the odd can of spray paint.  

Each project is broken down and illustrated with photographs.  The author steps you through each project presents you with multiple ways to change and individualise each painting should you choose to do so.  

You may well find yourself coming back to this book, as I do, in those times that you just need a little inspiration for a background or you're thinking of trying something new.
